Other Plugins

This is a list of the other plugins currently being used by this template that were in addition to the ones originally requested by AHA.  Here were the guidelines we used for selecting plugins.

  • Free
  • Dramatically reduced the time to create or manage content
  • Preferably thousands of installs and high ratings
  • Updated recently
  • SIMPLE plugins vs. complex ones
  • Either would enhance accessibility or not have an impact
  • Where not on the blacklist by Wp Engine

The list below explains each plug-in and the need it meets.

Back-end Admin

  • Absolute <> Relative URLs
    • Saves relative URLs to database. Displays absolute URLs.  This allows the template and examples to be portable to new instances without potential for all links to break.  And it keeps all visible URLS as absolute for compatibility with feeds, etc.
    • There is one issue with this plugin, but it is minor.  If you try to include a full reference (including “//sitedomain.com/”) to the site in the plain text area of a page, it will remove it.  The developer has been notified of this issue, but it is a minor issue to work around given the problems it solves, especially when developing in one domain and deploying under another.
  • Remove HTTP: Fix Mixed Content Warning  (disabled by default)
    • Remove HTTP is a plugin that automatically scans and removes both http: and https: protocols from all links. This helps resolve websites that are having “mixed content warnings” which is when the website has assets (images, JavaScript, and CSS) loading both HTTP and HTTPS
      • NOTE: We have this plugin DISABLED in the default install until we test it more fully.  But feel free to turn it on to try it out.
  • Category for Pages
    • This allows for category and tags to be applied to Pages like they are to Posts. This is important for being able to manage what items from the standard sidebar show up on various pages.  It also helps in limiting search results or being able to later program things like “related” content.
  • Enable Media Replace (disabled by default)
    • This plugin allows you to replace a file in the media library instead of creating a new one.  We have it disabled by default because it does not work completely as advertised.  If you replace a file and keep the old name, things are fine. But if you replace a file and expect it to update all the links to the new file name, it does not seem to always work.  Still it is a huge time saver if you just want to replace a file and keep the naming the same.  So we have it here and you can enable it if needed.
  • Media Library Categories
    • Adds the ability to use categories in the media library.  This allows us to make some of the media library searchable, but exclude other parts.
  • HTML Editor Syntax Highlighter
    • Makes for a much better experience troubleshooting or editing HTML in WordPress.
  • TinyMCE Advanced
    • This is the same visual editor already used by WordPress. This plugin just allows you to turn on and off features.  We were able to set up in interface that  allows for editors to use the styles built into the template without HTML knowledge.
  • Visual Editor for Custom Buttons
    • Allows buttons to be added to the TinyMCE interface to insert things specific to the theme in accessibly friendly ways.  We used this to add the button styles to the template.
  • WP Editor Widget
    • Brings the TinyMCE Visual Editor to the widget area.
  • CF Page or Post Duplicator
    • Allow for pages and posts to be cloned. This helps for less user error when adding new content that is intended to be similar to existing content.
  • SVG Support
    • Allows for SVG additions to the media library.  It can be limited to admins only.  We are running the simple mode only.
  • Search Everything
    • Enhances built in WP Search functionality so that media attachments can be included and specified categories can be excluded.  We are only using the very basic parts of the functionality.  Where this added value was in allowing Media Attachment pages to be searchable, which made building a basic resource library very easy.
  • Responsive Video Light
    • Fully responsive video embeds from YouTube or Vimeo.  We also enhanced the ease of use by adding custom buttons to the editor.
  • Enable Media Replace
    • It is difficult to use WordPress as a resource library without this plugin.  This plugin allows you to replace one media item for another one.

Front End User

  • Recent Post Widget with Thumbnails
    • The built-in recent post widget does not have thumbnails. Many site owners would like to have a recent post list with thumbnails that can be put various places on the site.
  • Widgets on Pages
    • This allow widgets to be displayed anyplace on the site with short codes.  This is vital for sites to be able to be set up with out any wordpress php knowledge.  Using this plugin we were able to setup a custom search page, custom home page, and more.
